While Class Action sidesteps the overkill that afflicts so many James Horner scores, its emphasis on low-key, mood-driven themes nevertheless proves dreadfully dull—so much so that, offered the choice between boredom or bombast, the listener may decide the former ain't so bad after all. Employing a stripped-bare ensemble of synthesizer, piano and saxophone, Horner sleepwalks his way through a series of tepidly atmospheric themes so weightless it seems they could dissipate at any moment—not a single memorable melody rises to the fore, and the dearth of creativity is matched only by the composer's obvious absence of passion in his work.
